Award-winning composer, playback singer and part of Bollywood’s hugely popular Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio, Shankar Mahadevan, gets set to elevate Dubai audiences with a semi-classical concert on Friday, 9th September at Sheikh Rashid Auditorium. Presented by Tambourine Live, an entertainment company that has carved a niche for conceptualizing the finest Indian classical and world music concerts, the show will also feature his prodigious sons Siddharth and Shivam Mahadevan. Performing together in Dubai for the first time, Shankar and sons are gearing up for ‘Songs of Krishna’ – a show around the ‘Krishna’ theme that will string together an eclectic mix of Carnatic music compositions, bhajans, qawwalis, thumris, abhangs as well as jazz and rock elements. The concert will also feature talented musicians from India on the flute, tabla, guitar, and keyboard, accompanying the singers who will render compositions in 6 Indian languages: Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Malayalam.
Shankar Mahadevan started training in Indian classical music (Hindustani & Carnatic) at a very young age and growing up in metropolitan Mumbai, he was exposed to many different genres of music and this shaped his musical aesthetics. Shankar first rose to fame in 1998 with his album ‘Breathless’ following the success of which he ventured into film music direction, partnering with Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendonsa. In 2001, he became the vocal lead of legendary fusion band ‘Remember Shakti’ with members including Zakir Hussain, John McLaughlin and Selvaganesh. A four-time National award winner with over 50 film projects to his credit, Shankar strives to incorporate the soul of classical music into his compositions “so that even a layman is exposed to our great classical tradition”
Following in Shankar’s footsteps are sons Siddharth, 24, and Shivam, 15, both already earning a name for themselves in the music industry. Rising singer-composer Siddharth Mahadevan made his career debut in 2013 with the song ‘Zinda’ in Hindi biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, winning him the Filmfare RD Burman Award for new music talent. Teenager Shivam Mahadevan, also made his debut in the same year for Dhoom 3 with the song ‘Bande Hain Hum Uske’
In ‘Songs of Krishna’ however, the three Mahadevans will move away from Bollywood fare and create a truly exceptional experience for music lovers: “We will feature a unique presentation of some specially created compositions on the theme of Krishna — The Source of Eternal Inspiration. I am hoping the deeply devotional songs will work magic to create the feeling of tremendous joy as well as inner calm and bliss. Songs of Krishna is our endeavor to create peace and harmony amidst this present-day scenario of unrest and turmoil,” said Shankar Mahadevan of the upcoming show.
“The popularity of classical music is dwindling and we want to take a conscious effort to revive interest. And one way to do that is work with a popular artist who understands the pulse of the audience and through him allow the audience to get a taste of something truly spectacular, in a format that is effortless to enjoy” said Vinod Raghavan, Director & CEO, Tambourine Live on the collaboration with Shankar Mahadevan for ‘Songs of Krishna’
“Shankar Mahadevan is one of the most gifted singer-musicians of our times. Although he is largely identified for his brilliant compositions in films, he is an equally brilliant classical vocalist who has an easy way of engaging his audience and we want the Dubai audience experience this brilliance. For ‘Songs of Krishna’, Shankar and his sons are working on something unique and something for everyone. If you are a music lover, you definitely shouldn’t miss this,” concluded Vinod.
