10 times silence is your best friend

Going through life is somewhat like making calculated moves on the dance floor during a competition. Knowing when to make a move and when to hold back can make all the difference. And sometimes, the best move you can make is to remain perfectly still—silent, even.

Hi this is Minakhee, (the person & not an AI persona behind Buzzingtales), and I’m here to tell you why silence isn’t just golden—it’s platinum. Backed by psychology, my own experiences, and a lot from good old world views( or should I say the views that seeped in from elders) here are 10 situations where staying silent might just be the smartest thing you ever do.

When the person in front isn’t ready

Have you ever been with someone who is in love with their own voice or words? Sometimes you may come across a person who is a chatty extrovert. It’s easy to converse with them and you initially enjoy it as you don’t have to put in much effort. You don’t have to carry out exhausting opening one-liners. Then to your dismay you realize that they are mentally deaf. I’m sure you get the scenario. Yes, you may be getting buffed and ready to have a free flowing two way conversation ( as should all conversation be)- a mentally engaging session. Suddenly you realize the futility of such an attempt. The other individual is so engrossed in their own trail of thoughts that they dismiss your views, speak over you and are enticed by their own logic and through-process. Yes, it has happened quite a few times and I look for an escape route. That sets me in a startup idea- Maybe I can invent something to teleport a person out of such situations. Ok! Let’s get the train back on track now. So you got what I was saying right? Personally I would just run in the other direction- but since we can’t discard social etiquettes there is another way. Yes, you guessed it right 🙂 Smile, nod your head, disengage and slowly distance yourself. I’m telling you, this is a survival technique which will ultimately save.

When emotions are on the rampage

Ever been in a situation where it feels like the room’s temperature just skyrocketed, and everyone’s words are daggers waiting to be thrown? Yeah, that’s not the time to play verbal dodgeball. Psychology tells us that when emotions are high, our brains switch to survival mode, and reasoning takes a backseat. So, instead of blurting out the first thing that comes to mind (usually something you’ll regret later), take a leaf out of the mindfulness playbook and zip it. Your future self will thank you.

When words are not enough or when one can understand without words

It’s never easy giving condolences. In somber moments like these your silence can be comforting to someone whose grief cannot be quantified in words. Maybe if you just hold the person’s hands or give a sincere hug that will be the kindest gesture.
There are some moments between friends and even lovers when souls connect and communicate without needing any words.

When You’re Clueless

In the age of the internet, everyone’s got an opinion on everything. But here’s the thing: you don’t have to be an encyclopedia on legs. If you’re as lost as a sock in a dryer about a topic, silence is your friend.

Trust me, I’ve learned this the hard way. Half-formed opinions are like soggy pancakes—unappetizing and best kept to yourself. So, next time you’re in over your head, channel your inner Sherlock and observe silently. It’s surprising what you might learn.

When Words Could Be Weapons

Sticks and stones may break bones, but words? They can shatter hearts and minds. Whether it’s a slip of the tongue in the heat of the moment or a carefully crafted barb, words have consequences.

So, before you unleash a verbal onslaught, pause and ponder: is it true, necessary, kind, and most importantly, helpful? If not, let silence reign supreme. Your relationships will thank you for it.

When Listening Is the Real Power Move

Picture this: you’re in a conversation, and instead of mentally rehearsing your response, you actually listen. Revolutionary, right?

In a world where everyone’s vying to be heard, being the silent observer can be a game-changer. Not only does it earn you brownie points for being a stellar listener, but it also opens doors to understanding, empathy, and maybe even a few juicy secrets. Shh, your silence is speaking volumes.

When Mindfulness Is Your Jam

Mindfulness isn’t just about sitting cross-legged and chanting ‘om’ (although that’s totally cool too). It’s about being present in the moment, and sometimes, that means shutting up.

Silence is the canvas upon which mindfulness paints its masterpiece. By embracing the quiet, you give your thoughts the space to breathe, unfurl, and maybe even surprise you. So, the next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, take a break from the noise and revel in the silence.

When Silence Is the Answer

Ever asked a question and received nothing but silence in return? Sometimes, that silence speaks louder than any words ever could.

In a world where we’re drowning in noise, silence is the rare gem that demands attention. It’s not about dodging the question or playing coy; it’s about letting the moment linger, pregnant with possibility and ripe for reflection. So, don’t be afraid to let silence do the talking—it’s got a lot to say.

When Words Won’t Work Magic

There are times when no matter how eloquent your speech or persuasive your argument, the outcome remains unchanged. It’s like trying to nail Jell-O to a wall—futile and messy.

In these moments, silence isn’t defeat; it’s acceptance. It’s acknowledging that not everything is within your control, and that’s okay. So, take a deep breath, let go of the need to fix everything, and bask in the sweet serenity of silence.

When You Need to Speak Up

Wait, isn’t this article about staying silent? Yes, but hear me out. Sometimes, the best way to make yourself heard is by not saying anything at all—at least not right away.

Knee-jerk reactions are as common as ordinary but silence is the ultimate power move. It’s the pause before the storm, the calm amidst chaos, and the invitation to respond mindfully instead of reactively. So, before you unleash a verbal tsunami, take a beat, gather your thoughts and let silence pave the way for meaningful dialogue.

Silence Isn’t Weakness, It’s Wisdom

In a world where everyone’s clamoring to be heard, silence is the unsung hero. It’s not about bottling up your thoughts or stifling your voice; it’s about knowing when to speak and when to let silence do the talking.

So, the next time you find yourself on the brink of verbal diarrhea, take a step back, and embrace the sweet embrace of silence. Your sanity—and your relationships—will thank you for it. Remember, sometimes the loudest message is the one left unsaid. Now go forth, my fellow silent warriors, and let your silence be your ultimate weapon.
